Memphis, TN : Two people injured when car slams into tree and caught fire in the 3100 block of Glengarry Road on Wednesday, April 8, 2015

Two people are recovering in the hospital and a Memphis mother is thankful a fiery crash didn't spread to her home.

Police believe the driver of a car which slammed into a tree and caught fire in the 3100 block of Glengarry Road was driving drunk.
The accident happened in the Scenic Hills area in the Raleigh neighborhood.

Police say around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday a man veered off the road into the front yard of a home on Glengarry Road and hit a tree.

The impact of the car hitting the tree caused the front passenger tire of the car to fly off and smashed into a Cadillac that belongs to Jacqueline Hopson.

The car that hit the tree then caught fire.

Memphis police on the scene helped put out the fire with Hopson's garden hose, because firefighters were busy with another fire nearby. Her son, Antonio, heard the commotion outside and described what he saw in his front yard.

"I went and woke my parents up and we all came outside and then we saw the carnage that happened and we didn't even notice the damage to our car, because we were just trying to help get the fire out," he said.

"My mom gave the officers the water hose to get the fire out," Antonio said. "That's when we noticed that the tire actually came off, about what looked like 50 feet, and smashed into the driver's side door of her car. There were pieces scattered everywhere."

The driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but was later upgraded to non-critical. The passenger is also in non-critical condition.

Police have not said if the driver will face any criminal charges.
