WEST RUTLAND, VT : Former Vt. state senator faces DUI-drugs charge following crash on 27th 2014

A former Vermont state senator was processed for driving under the influence of drugs after crashing his pickup Tuesday morning. It happened on Route 133 in West Rutland just after 8:30 a.m. Police say William Carris crossed the center line in his pickup and hit an oncoming pickup. The 69-year-old is charged with DUI-drugs and is due in court in August.

The other driver, Robert MacMurray, 71, was taken to the hospital with what police call minor injuries.

Carris represented Rutland County in the state Senate, where he also served as Democratic majority leader. Carris was first elected in 2006 and served on many committees including Corrections Oversight, and Economic Development, Housing and General Affairs. He stepped down in 2012 for health reasons.

Carris is also the former CEO and current chairman of Carris Reels, an international manufacturing company based in Rutland. The company employs 450 people, including 180 in Vermont.
