Louisville, KY : Fatal crash scene was 'total chaos' on Sunday, January 29th 2017
A neighbor who said she attempted to resuscitate one of the victims of a fatal car crash early Sunday morning in the Fairdale area described the scene as "total chaos" and said she hopes to never see anything like it again.
Jennie L. Burton, 45, and an unidentified male were killed and seven people were injured at approximately 12:45 a.m. Sunday outside La Movida Night Club in the 7800 block of Third Street Road. Louisville Metro Police arrested the driver, 43-year-old Chad Erdley, who admitted to drinking and smoking marijuana hours before the crash, according to an arrest citation.
Stephanie Roby, who lives around the corner from the nightclub on McNair Road, said she and her husband, Chris, were in their home with their dogs when they heard a loud boom. They went outside and drove down to the wreck, and saw "people just laying everywhere," she said.
Roby, who works for a home health agency and previously was a medical assistant, started to do chest compressions on one of the most severely injured men. First responders showed up within five minutes, but he and Burton died at the scene, she said.
"I knew he was gone. The man did not suffer," she said. "I definitely prayed for everyone. When they were passing, they were prayed for."
Roby said the nine victims were standing outside of La Movida at a taco truck, which shows up on the weekends for customers at the nightclub and O'Dolly's, a bar across the street. She said that nobody was standing around by the time she got there, estimating that up to 15 people helped with CPR and calling 9-1-1.
"They were trying to have a good night, have something to eat, and tragedy happened," she said. "It was total chaos."Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said Sunday that Erdley was speeding in his Chevrolet Impala southbound on Third Street Road when he lost control and struck a parked vehicle. The car spun out into the parking lot where it struck the nine pedestrians and another car.
Two of the pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene, while the other seven were taken to the University of Louisville Hospital with apparent non-life-threatening injuries. Jefferson County Coroner J. David Wood said Burton died of blunt force trauma. Officials are still attempting to locate the next of kin for the man.
