RICHLAND COUNTY, SC : Benedict College basketball player killed in hit-and-run on Sunday, December 4th, 2016

The Benedict College basketball team is mourning the death of a teammate who was killed in a hit-and-run early Sunday morning.

The Richland County Coroner said 22-year-old Rashee Hodges of Smoaks died early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle as he was standing on the side of the roadway. Autopsy results indicated Hodges died from traumatic injuries.

Troopers say Hodges and another person were both hit by a car around 1:20 a.m. on Bluff Road near Montgomery Lane. The driver of the car fled the scene before authorities arrived.

Hodges died at the scene of the collision. The other pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers describe the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run as a 1997-2001 gold, 4-door, Toyota Camry. They say the vehicle has some major damage to the right front bumper, headlight, and side mirror on the passenger side.

In a statement released Sunday afternoon, Benedict College said the college family is "heartbroken about the tragic loss of one of its talented and brightest students." Grief counselors will be on the campus throughout the week to speak with students and teammates of Hodges.

A moment of silence is planned on Monday at 3 p.m. in front of the Benjamin F. Payton Human Resource Center. A candlelight vigil is also set to follow Monday night's game on the activities field by the Benjamin E. Mays Arena.

Monday night's home basketball game against the Lane Dragons will be dedicated to Hodges. The game is at 7:30 p.m.
