Houston, TX : High-speed chase ends in major crash in North Houston on Friday, 12th August, 2016
A possible theft suspect led police on a high speed chase for about an hour Friday, before crashing into other vehicles at a stop light in north Houston.
The pursuit came to a sudden end about 2:30 p.m. Friday when the man's Ford pickup ran a stop light and careened into a silver four-door sedan and then a Toyota Tundra at the intersection of the Eastex Freeway and Aldine Mail Route.
"He barricaded himself inside the pickup," said Sgt. Erik Burse with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
A mother and her four children were in the sedan but were able to get out of the car and run to safety.
"They had minor injuries. They're going to be okay," he said.
Armed officers surrounded the truck and eventually pulled the man out. He was taken into custody. By later Friday, he had not been identified.
The pursuit began after Houston police officers received information that the man might have stolen items in his pickup truck. He took off when they attempted to pull him over about 1:20 p.m. along the 10300 block of McGallion Road, authorities said.
Police successfully deployed spike strips during the pursuit but the truck continued on at speeds of 60 mph even while running on two rims.
The police chase went on for several miles throughout the north Houston until it abruptly ended with the crash.
"It's never easy. It's not something that we enjoy doing but it is something that sometimes has to be done," Burse said. "We hope and pray at the end that it comes out okay."
Burse said he wasn't aware what charges might be filed against the driver.
