Winnebago,IL : Separate Lake County crashes injure two drivers, damage utilities on April, Tuesday 3rd 2018
Single-vehicle crash resulted in critical injuries to the driver and a natural gas leak near Lindenhurst Tuesday evening, while another crash about two hours later resulted in an injured driver and a power outage in Round Lake Beach.
Lake County sheriff's deputies were called to a crash just before 5 p.m. north of Grand Avenue on Route 45, where officers found a 2000 Ford Expedition on the east side of the roadway that had crashed into a tree and a gas line, causing it to spew natural gas, according a statement from Sgt. Sara Balmes.
The statement added that witnesses told investigators the vehicle was traveling southbound on Route 45 when it left the roadway for an unknown reason, went into a ditch and then struck a gas line that was actively leaking when deputies arrived. Deputies were able to remove the driver, a 16-year-old from Antioch, and get him far away from the large, leaking gas line, according to reports.
The driver was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries, Balmes said. She added that the incident remained under investigation Wednesday by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
In Round Lake Beach, police dispatchers received a call at 6:39 p.m. Tuesday for a crash in the westbound lanes of Rollins Road near North Nicole Lane, according to Deputy Chief Michael Scott.
According to witnesses, a silver, four-door sedan in the center turn lane turned into the westbound lane, nearly striking a Nissan sedan, which then swerved into the curb lane of westbound traffic, Scott said.
The Nissan then hit a Chevrolet pickup driven by a 41-year-old man, spinning it around and causing it to strike a utility pole on the driver's side door, Scott said, adding that the driver's legs were pinned in the wreckage. There were reports of power outages in the immediate area, according to Scott, and the roadway was closed to traffic for some time.
The Fire Department was able to extricate the pickup driver from the wreckage, and Scott said he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with leg pain, where he was treated and released.
According to Scott, he original sedan that witnesses say caused the accident left the scene and had not yet been located Wednesday.
