Arlington Heights, IL : 58-year-old Wildwood man critical after rollover accident in Antioch Township on Friday morning, March 3, 2017
Arlington Heights, Illinois
A single vehicle accident Friday morning on Route 45 in Antioch Township closed the roadway and the driver, who had to be extricated by firefighters, was flown by Flight for Life to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Sgt. Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff's Office said the crash was on Route 45 near Edwards Road, which is north of Route 173, and the roadway was closed down while the Technical Crash Investigation Team investigates the accident, which occurred around 10:20 a.m. when the vehicle went into a ditch and rolled.
"Preliminary investigation indicates the Kia was traveling southbound on Route 45, (and) there were no passengers in the vehicle," Covelli said in a statement. "Witnesses report the driver of the Kia was attempting to pass other vehicles when he lost control. The Kia left the roadway and struck a tree."
Firefighters had to remove the vehicle from around the victim, according to Antioch Fire Chief Jon Cokefair.
"They had to cut the roof off and pop the doors. He was partially through the windshield when we arrived," he said. "It took 30 minutes to cut him out."
Cokefair added that the driver had his legs pinned in, and he suffered multiple fractures and a punctured lung.
"He was in pretty bad condition, so we called for Flight for Life, because the extraction was taking some time," Cokefair said.
According to Cokefair, the rescue helicopter landed just as firefighters got the victim out, and he was immediately transported to Condell, the only Level One Trauma Center in the county.
