Castro Valley, CA : Motorcyclist killed in Castro Valley crash on Sunday night, August 17, 2014
Castro Valley, California
A motorcyclist that the California Highway Patrol spotted speeding from Oakland to Castro Valley was killed Sunday night when he collided with an SUV after exiting Interstate 580, authorities said Monday.
His name has not been released.
The CHP said its officers initially saw the motorcyclist in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 580 in Oakland about 8:15 p.m. Sunday but could not stop him.
The CHP helicopter responded, and officers were watching from the air as the motorcyclist sped off the Redwood Road offramp on I-580 in Castro Valley.
An Alameda County Sheriff's Office deputy in a patrol car had spotted the speeding motorcyclist as well and was trying to catch up to him when the motorcyclist broadsided a 1998 Ford Explorer at the intersection of Redwood Road and Castro Valley Boulevard, authorities said.
The motorcyclist was ejected onto the pavement and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The collision is under investigation by the CHP's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team. As part of the investigation, authorities are looking into reports the motorcyclist may have been involved in Oakland sideshow activity earlier Sunday.
Authorities said sideshow activity, where motorists engage in speeding and reckless driving, was reported Sunday at several locations on Oakland city streets and freeways. Officials said motorcyclists are becoming more involved in the sideshows.
The CHP dealt with sideshows on I-580, near the Oakland Zoo; Interstate 880, near High Street; and on Interstate 80 at the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza. CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said the sideshows forced temporary road closures and "really jammed up traffic."
Oakland police reported sideshow activity on Port of Oakland property, near Middle Harbor Road, as well as along Bancroft Avenue, near 90th Avenue, and other sites.
