Two truck drivers were killed in a fiery crash early Tuesday morning on Interstate 24 north of Nashville.
It happened just after 5 a.m. in the westbound lanes between Briley Parkway and the Interstate 65 split.
Police on scene told News 2 an IFCO Systems tractor trailer traveling eastbound crossed the median before overturning and hitting a FedEx semi traveling westbound.
The semis then burst into flames.
A black BMW rear ended the FedEx truck before it caught fire.
It took emergency crews more than two hours to put out the flames.
Both truck drivers were killed. The driver for IFCO Systems has been tentatively identified as 29-year-old John Greer of Nashville. Officials said due to severe burns, positive identification will be made through dental records.
The FedEx truck driver has been identified as 52-year-old Michael Donley of Illinois.
The driver of the car, 29-year-old David Hickox of Nashville, suffered minor injuries.
Greer, who worked for the Houston-based IFCO Systems, was hauling wooden pallets at the time of the crash.
Sheila Farrier, spokesperson for IFCO Systems, said, in part, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the drivers' families at this difficult time. Our immediate priority is to provide support to our employee's family.”
A spokesperson for FedEx told News 2 that Donley was traveling from Marietta, Georgia, to Champaign, Illinois.
“First and foremost, we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the drivers involved in the accident on I-24 in Nashville, TN,” spokesperson Scott Fiedler said in a statement. “Safety is of the utmost importance to FedEx, and we are cooperating with the authorities as they try to determine what caused the accident.”
All westbound lanes of I-24 will remain closed while crews clear the scene and continue their investigation. The Tennessee Department of Transportation says the highway will be closed until at least 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Eastbound lanes were also closed immediately following the crash but have since reopened.
