Urbana, IL : One person dies in eastbound I-74 crash on Thursday afternoon, July 21, 2016

Illinois State Police said a motorcyclist and that person's passenger were seriously injured in a crash with another motorcycle on Interstate 74 Thursday afternoon.

About 4:15 p.m., a group of motorcyclists were driving east on I-74 near the University Avenue exit in the left lane when a semitractor trailer merged from the right to the left lane.

Police said the driver of one motorcycle was unable to slow down and hit the rear end of a trailer that another motorcyclist that was hauling.

The driver of the cycle with the trailer lost control and went in the median, then regained control and brought that motorcycle to a full stop on the left hand shoulder. The driver of the motorcycle that hit the trailer laid down that cycle on the left shoulder.

The driver and passenger of that motorcycle were not wearing helmets. Both were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital with what were described by police as serious injuries.

That driver was issued a ticket for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Police did not release the names of the people involved in the crash.
