Knoxville,TN : Driver cited after Knox collision with Georgia congressman Barry Loudermilk on September, Wednesday 13th 2017

Speed and a driver's attempt to pass in the right-hand lane were factors in an interstate crash that injured a U.S. congressman and his wife as they traveled through Knox County this week, according to records.

U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., and his wife, Desiree, both were hurt in the rollover crash along Interstate 40 East near Campbell Station Road, according to Knox County Sheriff's Office crash report.

The congressman, who was driving, was attempting to merge into the right-hand lane when his 2017 Nissan Rogue was struck by a passing 2016 Nissan Versa, the report states.

The collision, which happened about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, knocked the Loudermilks' SUV off the roadway and into an embankment, causing it to roll over at least twice, the report reads.

Both were treated and released from the University of Tennessee Medical Center. The couple were recovering at their Georgia home Wednesday, according to a congressional staffer.

Loudermilk and his wife were passing through Knoxville on their return to Washington, D.C. after assisting with Hurricane Irma relief efforts in Georgia, according to his office.

The other driver, Shane Christopher Lake, 34, was cited for driving without insurance, the report states. He was not injured.

According to the crash report, neither driver was suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

All three occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
