Mount Clemens, MI : New Haven man killed in early-morning I-94 crash on February, Sunday, 18th 2018
Chesterfield Township police suspect slippery road conditions were one reason why a car crashed on Interstate 94 early Sunday, killing the sole occupant.
Police identified the victim as Mark Clegg, 46, of New Haven, according to a news release.
Officers began receiving 911 calls about 2:10 a.m. from motorists reporting an accident on eastbound I-94 near M-59.
Police and fire units found a heavily damaged 2005 black Ford Expedition off the roadway resting against a tree. They extricated the unresponsive driver and transported him to McLaren Macomb hospital in Mount Clemens, where he was pronounced dead.
“The investigation is ongoing, but at this time, it appears that icy road conditions were a contributing factor,” Detective Sgt. Deron Myers said in the release.
Myers said it’s not yet known if alcohol or drugs were involved.
Authorities shut down eastbound I-94 at M-59 (Hall Road/William Rosso Highway) while accident investigators completed their reconstruction of the scene.
According to the National Weather Service, snow showers moved through Macomb County late Saturday, leaving less than a half an inch in accumulation, but creating slick road conditions.
Investigators say there are no known witnesses to the crash. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Chesterfield Township Police Department at 586-949-2322.
