FRAMINGHAM, MA : Pepperell man hurt in chain-reaction crash on Pike on February, Tuesday 13th 2018
Framingham, Massachusetts
Six people were hospitalized, including a Pepperell resident and a state trooper, following a chain-reaction crash involving six vehicles on the Massachusetts Turnpike around 11:10 a.m. Tuesday.
The 56-year-old Pepperell man, the operator of a box truck believed to have started the chain-reaction crash, was taken by ambulance to Metrowest Medical Center in Framingham with non-incapacitating injuries, according to an email from State Police Media Relations Officer Dave Procopio.
The trooper, a 46-year-old male assigned to the department's Certification Unit, suffered potentially incapacitating injuries and was transported to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Procopio said.
A preliminary investigation into the crash indicates the box truck struck the rear of a pickup truck, driven by a 54-year-old Hudson man, causing the pickup to burst into flames. The Hudson man's pickup was pushed into another vehicle that was then propelled into a tractor trailer, operated by a 57-year-old Springfield man, who was uninjured.
During the chain-reaction sequence, a sports utility vehicle was pushed into the side the unmarked state police cruiser, Procopi stated.
The 54-year-old Hudson man driving the pickup truck was taken by medical helicopter to UMass Medical Center in Worcester.
Also injured in the crash were a man and woman, both 66, and both of Charlton, who were taken by ambulance to UMass Medical Center with incapacitating injuries.
A 46-year-old Worcester woman was also taken to UMass Medical Center with non-incapacitating injuries, according to Procopi.
The crash remains under investigation by Troop E and multiple State Police specialized units.
