Christiana, DE: Driver cited in motorcycle crash that injured 4 on Friday, July 17th 2015
A driver was cited in a crash Friday night involving three motorcycles and an SUV that left four people injured on Chapman Road in Christiana, state police said.Oliver Ngu, 56, of Hartford, Connecticut, was driving eastbound at 9:37 p.m. on Chapman Road in a 2015 Ford Edge when he attempted to make a left turn across traffic and failed to yield to oncoming traffic in the westbound lane, Sgt. Richard Bratz said.When Ngu crossed traffic to enter the Staybridge Suites Wilmington-Newark hotel, he drove directly into the path of a Harley Davidson Soft tail motorcycle driven by Robert L. Smith, 45, of Wilmington, Bratz said.The front end of the motorcycle hit the right passenger side of the SUV, ejecting Smith off the motorcycle and into the westbound lane of the road, Bratz added.Smith, who was operating the first motorcycle involved in the crash and was not wearing a helmet, was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center and admitted with serious injuries, Bratz said. He was treated for multiple facial abrasions, bodywide lacerations and a fractured leg, New Castle County EMS Sgt. Michael A. McColley said.Smith is currently being treated in ICU and described as stable, Bratz added.Brinton, who was also not wearing a helmet, was transported to the Christiana Trauma Center, as well, and admitted with serious, non-life threatening injuries, Bratz said. He was treated for multiple facial lacerations and bodywide abrasions, McColley said, adding that he was described as stable.His passenger, Kimberly Brinton, was not wearing a helmet, but her minor injuries did not require medical attention, Bratz said.Lodgeman suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene, Bratz said. He was not wearing a helmet during the crash, he added.Ngu, who was traveling with his son and daughter, was not injured in the crash and was cited by police for not yielding right of way to oncoming traffic when turning left, Bratz said. His son was not injured, but his daughter was later taken to Christiana Hospital for minor injuries, he added.The westbound lane of Chapman Road was closed for about one hour as state police investigated. The crash remains under investigation, Bratz said.
