BUSHNELL TOWNSHIP, MI : 2 people killed in New Year’s Eve crash on M-57 on Monday, 1st January 2018
Two people died after a vehicle overturned into a water-filled ditch, trapping the vehicle’s occupants on New Year’s Eve.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post responded to the crash around 1:35 p.m. Sunday at Town Hall Road and M-57.
Preliminary investigation revealed a 29-year-old man from Crystal was driving eastbound on M-57 and was making a turn onto southbound Town Hall Road when the vehicle slid off of the roadway and overturned in a water-filled ditch, trapping the vehicle’s four occupants.
The rear seat occupants were removed from the vehicle prior to emergency responders’ arrival. The front seat passengers, including the driver, were extracted by Sheridan Community Fire responders after the vehicle was lifted from its position in the water by Safety First Towing.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A front seat passenger was airlifted by Aero Med to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital. That passenger died on Monday, New Year’s Day.
Speed appears to be a factor in the accident, according to police who are not releasing names at this time. The investigation continues.
Assisting at the crash scene were Montcalm County Rescue 21, Rescue 22, Alpha 1, Alpha 2, Alpha 7, Sheridan Community Fire Department, Carson City Police Department, Montcalm County Sheriff’s Department, Montcalm County Central Dispatch, Aero Med and Safety First Towing.
