Gainesville, FL : Man, 23, dies in parking-lot accident on Tuesday, February 7th 2017

A 23-year-old man died was fatally injured after he stumbled in an apartment complex parking lot and was run over, Gainesville police said.

Malik T. Davis died Saturday night, police spokesman Ben Tobias said in an email Tuesday.

Davis was at The Ridge apartments about 11:55 p.m. when police were called to a crash in the complex parking lot at 3718 SW 24th Ave., Tobias wrote.

When they arrived, bystanders were trying to lift the vehicle off of Davis. Police officers and Gainesville Fire Rescue workers at the scene were able to free Davis from the car and he was taken to UF Heath Shands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers' investigation found that Davis stumbled as he walked between two parked cars and fell into the traffic lane of the parking lot. A vehicle driven by Garrett Coker, 19, ran over Davis and dragged him several feet, Tobias wrote.

The investigation is continuing and no charges have been filed.
