Carlyle, IL : Mount Vernon woman died and three other people injured when car slams into tractor-trailer in Clinton County on Tuesday, Oct 13, 2015
A woman from Mount Vernon, Ill., was killed and three other people were injured Tuesday after the car she was riding in slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder of Interstate 64, authorities say.
The crash happened at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday on eastbound I-64, near the Albers exit in Clinton County. The tractor trailer had broken down and was parked on the right shoulder since Monday night, Illinois State Police said.
A 2015 Toyota Corolla traveling east on the interstate drove onto the shoulder and hit the back of the parked truck. Police aren't sure why it went onto the shoulder. After hitting the back of the truck, the Corolla was then hit by another car, a 2016 Mazda CX-5, that was behind the Corolla.
A woman who was riding in the front seat of the Corolla was thrown from the car. The woman, 36, of Mount Vernon, died at the scene. Police haven't released her name; they say they are still trying to notify her relatives.
A man, 44, of Mount Vernon, was driving the Corolla. Police say he was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital in St. Louis. His condition was unavailable.
The driver of the Mazda and a passenger in that car were both taken to a hospital in Washington County, Ill. The Mazda was driven by a man, 72, of Green Valley, Ariz.; his passenger was a woman, 69, also from Green Valley.
The trucker, a 37-year-old man from Heltonville, Ind., was uninjured.
Eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed for much of the afternoon as investigators worked the crash.
