Three people, including a Maryland state trooper, were injured on Interstate 95 southbound in Howard County late afternoon Wednesday, police said.

At about 3 p.m., Trooper First Class Wing Tong stopped a Ford in the area of Route 175 that appeared to have improper license plates, police said. Tong walked up to the passenger side of the car he had stopped, when, for unknown reasons, a Mercury moved onto the interstate's right shoulder, hitting Tong's patrol vehicle and the Ford parked in front of it.

The Ford hit Tong and pushed him over the guardrail, police said. He was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Police identified the driver of the Mercury as Maureen Walter, 65, of Poolesville, a civilian employee of the Maryland State Police. She was driving a vehicle registered to the department, police said.

Police identified the third driver as Fabino De Aguiar, 35 of Silver Spring.
