A 51-year-old man was killed after his car hit a utility pole in Fleming Island on Monday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was in a 2011 Ford Fiesta, traveling southbound on U.S. 17 in the outside travel lane at 4:30 a.m. For unknown reasons, the car left the roadway and struck a concrete utility pole.

The driver was listed in critical condition at UF Health of Jax but later died. He has not been identified. An investigation is pending.
