San Jose, CA : Campbell woman killed, Driver arrested on DUI after a head-on Highway 101 crash early Thursday, February 11, 2016

A Campbell woman was killed when the car she was in crashed and was hit head-on by another vehicle on Highway 101 early Thursday, and her driver has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said.

The 23-year-old victim was not immediately identified Thursday. According to the California Highway Patrol, she was a passenger in a southbound 2007 Volkswagen approaching Bailey Avenue around 6:05 a.m. when the driver lost control, causing the car to hit a guardrail, spin back onto the freeway and come to a stop in a middle lane facing the wrong way.

That was soon followed by a 2007 Hyundai hitting the Volkswagen head-on, causing the Volkswagen to spin out into the right shoulder and sending the Hyundai into the center median, the CHP said.

The Volkswagen passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The man driving the car, 27-year-old Gilroy resident Brandon Gates, was taken to Regional Medical Center in San Jose with major injuries. Gates was formally arrested on suspicion of DUI, though he remains in the hospital's custody.

The Hyundai driver, a 47-year-old Oakley man, was also taken to the hospital, for moderate injuries. The collision remains under investigation.
