Beloit,WI : Two people were injured in a crash that involved two semi-trucks and two cars on November, Wednesday 8th 2017
Two people were injured in a crash that involved two semi-trucks and two cars on Wednesday at about 7:52 a.m.
The crash occurred at the intersection of North U.S. Highway 14 and West Holt Road in the Town of Union, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff's Office.
When deputies arrived, one of the cars was pinned underneath one of the semi-trailers with a woman trapped inside. Personnel from Evansville Police, Dane County Sheriff, Wisconsin State Patrol and Brooklyn, Evansville, Fitchburg and Oregon EMS fire departments also responded.
The investigation indicated a 1997 Saturn driven by Avery Johnson, 23, of Madison, was southbound on Highway 14 and had stopped at the intersection with West Holt Road waiting to turn east when it was rear ended by a southbound 2006 Peterbilt seimi-tractor trailer driven by Ethan Luke, 21, of Mauston. The impact of the collision sent the Saturn into the path of a northbound 2011 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer driven by Juan Cruz, 33, of Genoa City, which was slowing to a stop at the time. The Peterbilt then slid out of control and overturned onto a northbound 2011 Chevy Cruze driven by Lynda Laitinen, 31, of South Beloit, trapping her underneath.
Fire department personnel were able to wedge multiple High Lift airbags and wooden blocks underneath the overturned trailer which allowed them to pull the Chevy Cruze free using a winch cable attached to a fire engine. Laitinen was then extricated from her vehicle with the Jaws of Life and then air-lifted to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison via Med Flight with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries. Johnson was transported by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital in Madison with non-life threatening injuries as well. The other 2 drivers were uninjured in the crash.
Inspectors from the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to inspect the semi-tractor trailer units & the crash was reconstructed by the Rock County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Team. U.S Highway 14 was closed between State Highways 59 and 92 for over seven hours as a result of the crash.
