Eustis, FL : Mother killed, son hurt in ATV crash on Sunday night, July 6, 2014

A holiday weekend all-terrain vehicle ride turned tragic for a Eustis man and his mother Saturday night.

Authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol said Dillon Ash, 21, was driving an ATV on County Road 44A near Eustis, and his mother, Melissa Cole, 43, was a passenger on the vehicle.

Ash tried to cross the road at June Avenue, about 9 miles east of Eustis, and drove in front of a small pickup driven by Raeanne Champion, 16.

Officials said the pickup truck could not stop in time and struck the ATV.

Investigators said Cole was pronounced dead at the scene, and Ash was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.

Champion was not injured.

So far, no citations have been issued. The crash is still under investigation.
