Syracuse, IN : 11-year-old killed in ATV crash in southeastern Elkhart County on Monday evening, July 25, 2016
An 11-year-old Syracuse boy was killed in an off road vehicle crash Monday evening in southeastern Elkhart County.
According to a report from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement, the boy, Kyle Hilty, was last seen operating an ATV on his family's property along County Road 35 just north of the Elkhart-Kosciusko county line around 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Indiana Conservation Officers said his 13-year-old brother found him lying in a field about 20 minutes later. A preliminary investigation found that Hilty's ATV struck a piece of farm equipment that was hidden by tall grass in a field. On impact, Hilty, who was not wearing a helmet or any other safety equipment, was thrown from the ATV.
Benton Township Fire/EMS, Turkey Creek-Syracuse Fire/EMS, Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, Syracuse Police and Indiana Conservation Officers attempted to revive Hilty without success.
The incident remains under investigation by Indiana Conservation Officers with assistance from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department and Syracuse Police.
