GUILDERLAND, NY : Guilderland teen suffers severe crash injuries on Tuesday, May 30, 2017
Town police Tuesday released more information about the serious crash on Hurst Road Sunday.
Speed appears to be a contributing cause of the crash, which happened at about 8:25 p.m. and seriously injured Alyssa Gelfand, 17, of Witte Road in Guilderland, police said.
Gelfand suffered severe traumatic injuries and was flown to Albany Medical Center Hospital.
The passengers in the vehicle were Guilderland teens Sophia Melfe, 16, of Debutante Manor and Sergio Medina, 17, of Greenthorne Boulevard. Both suffered what police described as non-critical injuries and were taken by ambulance to Albany Med.Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, police said.
All occupants attend Guilderland High School. The school district has been notified and has counseling available for the students there.
The police investigation is continuing.
In November 2000, a crash on Hurst Road claimed the life of two Guilderland High School friends and seriously injured a third after the driver lost control of the car and it struck a tree.
Police at the time said a combination of a wet road and pitch-black darkness at the time of the 7:22 p.m. accident may have contributed. Classmates and other mourners turned the tree, about a mile west of Route 146, into a roadside memorial.
