Gillespie, IL : Sandra Slezinger, 63, killed and another woman seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in southern Macoupin County Tuesday afternoon, September 13, 2016

A woman was killed and another woman was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in southern Macoupin County Tuesday afternoon, Illinois State Police said.

The driver, Sandra Slezinger, 63, of Bethalto, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Macoupin County Coroner’s Office. Her passenger, Thelma Branch, 83, of East Alton, was airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital, state police said.

The crash occurred about 4 miles west of Gillespie on Illinois 16 near Walker Road at 12:37 p.m.
Slezinger was westbound when her vehicle left the roadway and she overcorrected. Her car went back across the roadway and hit an embankment and rolled over, state police said.

Illinois 16 was closed for approximately three hours. The crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
