Richmond, VA : Man dead after crashing into Richmond building on Tuesday evening, April 12, 2016

The driver of an SUV died Tuesday evening after crossing a median and several lanes of traffic before crashing into a building on Chamberlayne Avenue in Richmond, according to police.

Police were called to the scene at 6:08 p.m., said police Capt. Emmett Williams, who said the driver was dead at the scene. Police were investigating the cause of the crash.

The 2000 and 2100 blocks of Chamberlayne Avenue were expected to be closed until about 9:30 p.m., Richmond police spokeswoman Susan Rowland said.

Nobody was in the Able Glass Services of Richmond building at 2007 Chamberlayne Ave. when it was struck by the SUV, Rowland said. The crash caused such extensive damage that the building had to be stabilized by the Fire Department.

Nobody else was injured, according to Rowland, who said the driver was traveling southbound when his SUV went over the median, crossed the northbound traffic lanes and hit the building.
