Norwalk, OH : Woman dies after crash involving ambulance on Thursday September 22 2016

An paramedic was killed and three other people were injured following a crash involving an ambulance at a rural intersection Thursday evening.

Troopers from the state Highway Patrol’s Fremont Post were dispatched to the scene of the two-vehicle injury crash that occurred at 7:21 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 197 and State Route 19 in Sandusky County’s Green Creek Township.

William A. Bluethmann, 48 of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. was driving a 2013 Dodge Journey west on County Road 197 when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign at the State Route 19 intersection and struck the ambulance in the side a southbound 2011 Ford ambulance being driven by Sandra L. Cline, 45, of Holland, Ohio, troopers said. The collision caused the ambulance to overturn.

Cline was flown from the scene by a LifeFlight helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 12:28 a.m., troopers said.

Bluethmann suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported by Sandusky County EMS to Fremont Memorial Hospital.

Two passengers in the ambulance also were hurt. Chris Nelson, 42, of Wauseon, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported from the scene by Sandusky County EMS to St. Vincent’s. Toni Johnson, 45, of Tiffin, also suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported by North Central EMS to Fremont Memorial Hospital.

The ambulance sustained severe damage and was towed from the scene by Madison Motors. The Dodge Journey sustained severe damage and was towed from the scene by Ash Towing.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Green Springs Police Department, Green Springs Fire, Clyde Fire, Green Springs EMS, Sandusky County EMS, Clyde EMS, Sandusky Township EMS, Life Flight, Ash Towing and Madison Motors.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation, troopers said.
