Hull, MA : Arnoldsville man killed in wreck on U.S. Highway 29 on Saturday, 4th January, 2020

An 81-year-old man died Saturday following a vehicle wreck near Hull, according to Athens-Clarke police.

Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson said Joe Louis Mattox of Arnoldsville was killed in the two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 29.

The wreck occurred about 10:45 a.m., when police said a 1993 Buick Regal driven by Mattox pulled out of Harve Mathis Road and into the path of a 2011 Jeep traveling north on U.S. 29, according to police.

The Jeep, driven by a 19-year-old man from Canon, rammed the side of the Regal, killing the driver and injuring his 77-year-old passenger, Ruby Wilhite of Athens, police said.

Wilhite was extricated from the car and transported by ambulance to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the Jeep had minor injuries and his passenger, a 19-year-old woman, had a possible broken hand, police said.
