Detroit, MI : Early-morning tanker crash critically injuries driver, shuts stretch of I-75 in Detroit area, Aug 20, 2015

Police say an early-morning tanker crash and fire critically injured the truck's driver, sending flames into the air that illuminated the Detroit-area sky and closing a freeway.

State police Lt. Mike Shaw says the crash was reported about 3 a.m. Thursday on northbound Interstate 75 near the border between Detroit and Lincoln Park. About two hours later, Shaw says fire crews had the flames out. He says the injured driver was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The crash closed the freeway in both directions on Thursday morning. The Michigan Department of Transportation says the tanker was hauling about 8,000 gallons of fuel and the northbound lanes of the freeway could be closed for several days for repairs.

Shaw says there's no immediate word of the cause of the crash.
