CLEVELAND, OH : A man is dead after he crashed head-on into a fuel tanker on Sunday, October, 29th 2017

A man is dead after he crashed head-on into a fuel tanker early Sunday on Interstate 77 in Cleveland, police said.

The crash happened about 3:15 a.m., Cleveland police spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said. A 43-year-old man was driving a 2007 Chevy Trailblazer SUV southbound in the northbound lane of I-77 when he smashed into a 2017 Volvo fuel tanker.

The SUV's driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Ciaccia said. He has not been publicly identified.

The fuel tanker's driver did not suffer any injuries, Ciaccia said.

The head-on crash caused the tanker to spill a large amount of fuel, which triggered road closures on I-77 northbound throughout Sunday morning. As of 1:30 p.m. Sunday, I-77 northbound remains closed between Interstate 480 and Pershing Avenue as the clean-up continues.
