One woman was seriously injured after a head-on wreck occurred on Interstate 40 westbound near Jones Sausage Road Sunday morning, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.
A red Audi A4 sedan driven by Julia Margaret Fritschel, 21, was heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-40 and going around a long curve near exit 303 around 6 a.m. when she slammed head-on into a silver PT Cruiser driven by Chandra Waletha Green, 41, authorities said.
Troopers estimated that the cars were traveling at approximately 65 mph when they collided. The PT Cruiser caught fire and Green was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Fritschel suffered two broken ankles.
Fritschel faces multiple charges including careless and reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, and driving with an open container of alcohol. She also has a pending charge that will be determined once Green’s condition becomes clearer.
According to Wake County arrest records, Fritschel was charged with DWI on May 28.
The accident was cleared around 7:15 a.m.
