Braddock Heights, MD : Myersville man remains critical after fiery crash near Braddock Mountain on Thursday, 21st November, 2019

A 21-year-old Myersville man remained in critical condition nearly a week after he was pulled from the wreckage of a burning SUV near Braddock Mountain.

A silver Toyota 4Runner was traveling east on Interstate 70 near the exit for Braddock Mountain when, shortly before 2:15 a.m. Sunday, it struck the guardrail of the right shoulder and overturned in an embankment off the highway, according to a previous story in The Frederick News-Post.

While several occupants of the SUV got out on their own and called 911, Jessie McMullen was trapped in the vehicle, which had since caught fire.In a stroke of luck, Cpl. David Wagoner, a state trooper, was also headed east on the interstate on his way to work at the Rockville barrack when the first dispatch was made about the crash a short time later.

“I live out in Cumberland, so on my drive into work I switch over and listen to all the local radios of the different [jurisdictions] I drive through just in case,” Wagoner said when reached for comment Thursday. “So I knew when the call went out that I was about two miles away, so I was close.”

Wagoner activated his lights and sirens, and arrived before any other units and quickly spotted the overturned SUV with flames rapidly spreading out of the engine compartment. Approaching a small group of people, Wagoner identified the driver, 25-year-old Tyler Kisner, and learned that McMullen was still in the vehicle.

Making their way down the embankment, Wagoner and Kisner approached the SUV from different sides, with Kisner approaching the driver’s side passenger door where he could reach McMullen, Wagoner said. As Kisner worked to pull the young man out, Wagoner pushed from the other side, eventually freeing McMullen, only to learn that he was still very much in danger.

“As we pulled him free I could see the passenger, from his waist down, was fully engulfed in flames, so I told the driver to start rolling him to try and put out the flames while I got my fire extinguisher,” Wagoner said.
