A driver and passenger were both injured Saturday afternoon when a car struck the back of a tractor-trailer along Interstate 78 in Lower Saucon Township, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Barry J. Stem, 35, of Phillipsburg at 3:15 p.m. was driving a 2011 Mazda east along the right shoulder of the highway when he struck the back of a 1998 Kenworth rig being driven by Rigoberto Reyes, 46, of Florida, state police in Belfast said.
Reyes had stopped the tractor-trailer near mile-marker 69.2 and was just starting to move east up the shoulder of the highway when the collision occurred, according to police.The Mazda struck the tractor-trailer on the back passenger's side with the driver's side front end, police said. Both Stem and Ashley M. O'Rourke, 26, of Washington were treated for undisclosed injuries. Reyes was not hurt.
The accident occurred about 2 miles west of Route 33, about midway between the exits. Traffic was backed up to the 412 exit for nearly two hours with eastbound travel down to one lane as crews cleared debris. By 5 p.m., the lanes were reopened, but the shoulder had remained closed.
