Mitchell, SD : Mitchell man injured after a two-vehicle crash in Mitchell on Monday, August 1, 2016
A Mitchell man sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Sioux Falls following a two-vehicle crash Monday in Mitchell.
Thomas Jerke, 59, of Mitchell, was hospitalized after his 1985 Honda moped was struck by a 1998 GMC Sonoma pickup driven by Grant Uecker, 68, of Mitchell, at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Kimball Street in Mitchell, according to Patrol Officer Dan Kopfmann.
At about 3:30 p.m., Uecker, traveling eastbound on 11th Avenue, failed to make a complete stop at a stop sign and struck Jerke’s moped, Kopfmann said. Jerke was traveling northbound on Kimball Street.
Jerke was transported by ambulance to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell but was soon airlifted to a hospital in Sioux Falls. Kopfmann said Jerke sustained serious head injuries but did not know if they were life-threatening. Jerke was not wearing a helmet.
Uecker was uninjured and was cited with failure to stop and failure to wear a seat belt.
The moped sustained extensive damage, while only minor damage was found on the Sonoma.
The Davison County Sheriff’s Office also responded. The Mitchell Police Division continues to investigate the crash.
