Springfield, OR : Three children struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing Main Street in Springfield on Sunday, February 22, 2015
A car hit and killed three children ages 4 to 8 as they crossed Main Street with their mother using crosswalk Sunday evening, police said.
Their mother was also hit. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
"At this time it appears the three children and an adult female were pedestrians," Police Chief Tim Doney said at the scene. "At this point everything is preliminary, but at this point it looks like they were crossing Main Street at 54th and they were struck by a vehicle that was traveling eastbound on Main Street."
The driver was not injured and stayed at the scene. Officers say he is fully cooperating. "No arrests or citations have been issued at this time," police said in a press release. "The investigation into the accident is ongoing."
The crash happened around 4:50 p.m. The investigation kept both eastbound lanes of Main closed at 54th Street for 7 hours.
Officers also asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call the Springfield Police Department and speak with Officer Brian Antone at (541) 726-3714.
"The Springfield Police department will not release further information regarding the children," the Springfield Police Department said in a press release just before midnight Sunday. "At this time the names of the adult victim, or the driver of the vehicle, are not being released due to the ongoing investigation and family notifications."
