Belleville, IL : Woman ID’d in fatal crash; I-64 reopens after lengthy closure on Saturday, January 28th 2017
A Marion woman died when her vehicle crashed into a tractor-trailer Saturday afternoon on westbound Interstate 64, east of Okawville.
Dana L. McSparin, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:45 p.m. by Washington County Coroner Mark Styninger.
The road was reopened as of 5:30 p.m. after being closed for more than four hours. The Illinois Department of Transportation had urged motorists to avoid the area through at least 5 p.m. Police diverted traffic onto northbound Illinois 127, which meets with westbound Illinois 177 at New Minden. Illinois 177 connects with I-64 at Okawville.
McSparin was eastbound around noon when she reportedly left the roadway, crossed the median and collided with a tractor-trailer that was traveling westbound, according to the coroner. She was wearing her seat belt. It was not immediately clear what caused McSparin to leave the roadway. Both vehicles had serious damage. Okawville Fire Department crews extricated McSparin from her vehicle.
No autopsy was planned for McSparin, Styninger said, but the coroner collected routine toxicology samples and submitted them for testing. Illinois State Police and the coroner’s office will continue to investigate the crash.
