Yuba County, CA : Man seriously injured after collision with car in Smartsville on Monday, January 4, 2016

A 30-year-old man was seriously injured on Monday after a car collided with him, knocked him down an embankment and then landed on top of him.

Stephen Kelly, of Yuba City, was taken to Rideout Memorial Hospital with “major internal injuries,” according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. in the driveway of a home on Melody Road in Smartsville. According to authorities, 65-year-old Jack Baldwin, the resident of the home, was attempting to turn his Ford Expedition around in his driveway. Kelly and another person were standing in front of the car, attempting to pull a tarp out of the way of the car’s tires. Baldwin backed the car up; as he tried to pull the car forward slowly, he pressed both the gas and brake pedals at the same time.

The car accelerated, knocking Kelly over some bookshelves that were nearby and down the hillside. The car continued down the embankment, landing on top of Kelly. Baldwin tried to back the car up, but couldn’t. Both the CHP and the Penn Valley Fire Department responded to the accident scene; according to the CHP, neither drugs nor alcohol was a factor in the accident.
