Lee County, FL : Bicyclist critically injured in U.S. 41 crash in south Lee on Tuesday night, January 27, 2015

A crash involving a vehicle and a bicycle Tuesday night along U.S. 41 southbound and Daniels Parkway left a bicyclist in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The bicyclist, Cory Collier, 26, of Fort Myers, was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet during the crash, reports show.

A Toyota Scion driven by Marie Scarpantonio, 27, of Fort Myers, was southbound in the inside lane of U.S. 41 approaching Daniels Parkway, while the bicyclist was headed west on the north side of Daniels approaching 41. As the bike rider crossed U.S. 41 outside of the crosswalk at a red light, the vehicle had a green light and entered the intersection, hitting the bike, reports show.

The south Fort Myers crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. and blocked all southbound lanes of U.S. 41 for about an hour and a half while authorities investigated.

Charges are pending, FHP reports.
