Chelsea, MI : Driver, passenger killed in crash after leading police on high speed chase? on the border of Dearborn and Detroit on Monday night, January 2, 2017
Two people are dead following a high speed police chase through the City of Detroit that ended with a fatal crash overnight on the border of Dearborn and Detroit.
Detroit police were pursuing the Dodge Caravan around 12:40 a.m. Monday after the driver fled from officers at a high rate of speed. As the van was traveling southbound on Whitcomb Avenue, it was struck by a Ford Focus traveling eastbound on Tireman Avenue, causing the drive of the Dodge to lose control. The van continued to travel south on Coleman Street in Dearborn, striking several unoccupied parked vehicles before coming to a stop.
The passenger of the Dodge, a 23-year-old Redford Township man, was killed during the accident and pronounced dead at the scene. The 23-year-old driver, a Detroit resident, was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver and passenger of the Ford Focus were both injured as well. The driver, a Detroit resident, was taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries, while his passenger, a Kalamazoo woman, was treated at the scene.
It’s not yet known if alcohol was a factor in the crash and the incident remains under investigation.
“This incident is a terrible tragedy and our condolences go out to all the families involved,” said Dearborn Police Chief Haddad. “This is still and active ongoing investigation and all other informational requests should be directed to the Detroit Police Department.”
