Ocala, FL : Man injured in crash after fleeing Ocala police officer in the 1800 block of Northeast 28th Street on Monday, 29th July 2019

A driver who fled from a police officer was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in northeast Ocala Monday night.

As of Tuesday morning, police had not released the injured man’s name. The crash was reported at 10:44 p.m. in the 1800 block of Northeast 28th Street.

According to the Ocala Police Department, an officer stopped a BMW 300 series in the 2400 block Northeast Third Avenue for speeding. Authorities said the officer got out of the patrol car and spoke to the driver, who refused to give any information.

The man rolled up the window and drove away, police said. The officer pursued the vehicle for less than a mile and canceled the pursuit.

Soon afterward, the officer saw an explosion in the distance, called for emergency personnel and drove to the crash site.

Police believe the driver went over a small hill and lost control of the car, which veered to the right. The car hit a wooden utility pole, snapping it in the middle. The car then destroyed parts of a chain-link fence, hit a tree and landed on its roof in someone’s yard.

The driver was taken to a hospital in serious condition, officials said. He was is in stable condition Tuesday morning.
