SALLISAW, OK : Man injured after car crashes into moped on Friday, October 6, 2017
Sallisaw Police told 40/29 News the driver of a car was high on meth and had a young child in the car when he crashed into a 69 year-old man who was riding a moped.
The crash happened Thursday morning at the intersection outside the Sequoyah County Sheriffs Department.
Courthouse surveillance cameras captured the video. Police said Jerry Ball, 69, was on his moped and was slowing down to turn when the car behind him hit the moped. The video shows Ball being thrown onto the hood of the car and then onto the pavement.
Ball, was wearing a helmet but still sustained head injuries. Currently he is in a Tulsa hospital in serious but stable condition.
Police said the crash happened at speeds of approximately 25 miles per hour.
"Ultimately a 25 mile per hour collision when you're riding on a motorcycle or moped is pretty extensive," said Captain Jeff Murray.
Many Sallisaw residents know Ball because he's traveled around town on his moped for years.
"I've known him off and on for several years. He's never been in anybody's way or anything, he just kind of kept to himself," Rodney Hodges said. "I'm used to him being on a bicycle but I've seen him on a moped the last few years."
Police arrested the driver of the car, David Isbell, of Sallisaw.
According to the police report, the 38 year-old man told officers he'd taken methamphetamine and xanax. Capt. Murray told 40/29 News that officers also found more meth inside the car.
Currently, Isbell is facing charges of driving under the influence, causing an accident with bodily harm, numerous drug charges, as well as endangering the welfare of a minor.
Isbell was still behind bars in the Sequoyah County Detention Center Friday night. He has not yet been issued a bond.
Capt. Murray said Isbell could be facing additional charges depending on the out come of the victim.
