DELAWARE COUNTY, OH : One dead after pursuit ends in crash in Delaware on Monday, November 14th 2016
A car chase overnight resulted in a crash and the suspect dead after a standoff with local law enforcement.
According to the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the pursuit started on U.S. 23 in Marion County around 9:50 pm.
Their officers had tried to pull a car over after the driver had failed to move over for a trooper who was stopped on the side of the road. The vehicle continued into Delaware County, reaching speeds of up to 80 mph.
The Delaware Post of the OSHP was then called in to assist their officers and put out stop sticks. The suspect’s tires were punctured, slowing down the vehicle. Officers were able to catch up, when the suspect turned onto U.S. 42. This is where the suspect crashed into a pole.
According to officials, gun fire had been exchanged before the crash so they believed the suspect was armed. They called in SWAT after surrounding the vehicle. Eventually after getting no response from the suspect, they made an approach towards the car with a robot and SWAT officers.
Then it was discovered that the suspect had passed away. The cause of death is still unknown at this time.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol are working together to investigate the scene. US 23 southbound was closed for several hours during the investigation but has since reopened.
