One person was killed and another was injured Thursday afternoon in a crash on Interstate 40 west near Cool Springs, according to Iredell County EMS.
The names of those involved have not been released.
The wreck occurred around 4 p.m. near the 158 mile marker. Initial reports said multiple motorcycles were involved.
The crash closed the westbound lanes for about an hour, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. Traffic was backed up more than three miles by 4:30 p.m.
Damaged motorcycles could be seen on the sides of the interstate.
The injured person was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem in stable condition, according Blair Richey, director of Iredell EMS.
