Covington Township , MI : Champion man killed in a single-vehicle accident in Baraga County at east of Kings Lake Road on Sunday , January 19th 2015

A Champion man is dead following a single-vehicle accident in Baraga County.

A passerby found a lone vehicle in a ditch on its side early Sunday morning on US-41 near Tioga Creek around one mile east of Kings Lake Road in Covington Township.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, 56-year old Matthew Davidson, was found unresponsive and was later pronounced dead from the crash. Davidson was the Republic Michigamme Varsity girls basketball coach. His next of kin has been notified.

An investigation revealed Davidson's vehicle was travelling eastbound on US-41 in the Tioga Creek area when the vehicle lost control on the wet, snow-covered highway, crossed the centerline and struck a snow embankment, flipping his Ford F-150 truck.

The Michigan State Police were assisted at the scene by Covington Fire and Ambulance, L'Anse Fire and Rescue and Bay Ambulance.
