NEWPORT, NC : Vehicle collision results in death on Sunday, August 6, 2017

A vehicle collision early Sunday on Nine Mile Road resulted in a fatality.
The N.C. Highway Patrol reported that at 4:20 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle traveling south on Nine Mile Road ran off the road to the right, struck a culvert and then hit a tree. Sgt. T.L. Van Dyke with the Highway Patrol said Monday no other vehicles were involved, and the collision resulted in one fatality.
“Apparently there was a fire involved with the collision,” Sgt. Van Dyke said, meaning the car had caught fire.
Sgt. Van Dyke said the collision is still under investigation. There are no known witnesses to the incident, so investigators have gone by physical evidence at the scene to determine how the collision occurred.
Sgt. Van Dyke also said there has been no evidence found to suggest foul play, and it’s not known if drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision.
