Naples, FL : 82-year-old man died in car-scooter crash in Collier county on Sunday night, Sep 20, 2015

An 82-year-old Naples man riding a scooter was killed after he was struck by two cars Sunday night in Collier County.

Stephen Elsaesser Jr. died at the scene of the crash, which occurred at 8:23 p.m. on Immokalee Road north of Camp Keais Road, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

Elsaesser was southbound on Immokalee Road toward Camp Keais Road when his Suzuki Burgman scooter was struck from behind by a BMW sedan driven by Nimesh H. Patel, 32, of New Hyde Park, N.Y., FHP reports show.

Patel was momentarily distracted by an electronic device and failed to observe the slower-moving scooter. Elsaesser fell from the scooter and was hit by a third vehicle in the northbound lane of Immokalee Road, reports show.

Janet Go, 62, of Naples was driving a Lexus ES 350 behind other northbound vehicles that swerved toward the east shoulder and suddenly stopped to avoid the crash when she steered to the left and rolled over the scooter driver in the roadway, reports show.

Neither Go nor Patel were injured in the crash. Patel was charged with careless driving, the FHP reports.
