Saltsburg, PA : 2 killed in Indiana County car crash on Thursday night, November 10, 2016
An Indiana County man and his 3-year-old son were killed in a two-vehicle accident late Thursday night along Route 286, about 9 miles east of Saltsburg, authorities said.
Joseph B. Wells Sr., 42, of Armstrong Township was fatally injured at 10:58 p.m. when his westbound 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass was split in half during a collision with an eastbound Ford Escape driven by William C. Brice, 32, of McIntyre, near Gemmell Road in Young Township, state police at Indiana said.
Wells' car went out of control on a curve, hit the berm then twisted counterclockwise into the eastbound lane before the front end of Brice's vehicle hit the passenger side of Wells' car, police said.
Wells, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his car. Wells' son, Joseph Wells Jr., was in a child seat in the rear of the car, but was partially ejected from vehicle.
Both victims suffered multiple blunt-force trauma and were pronounced dead at the scene at 11:52 p.m., county Coroner Jerry Overman Jr. said.
A second child, a 1-year-old girl, was taken by medical helicopter to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where she was reported in serious condition Friday night, police said.
Medics took Brice and two passengers, Noel T. Brice, 31, of McIntyre and a 3-year-old girl to Allegheny Health Network Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, where they were treated for minor to moderate injuries, troopers said.
Toxicology tests on Wells Sr. are pending, state police said.
Steven Marsh, who identified himself as Wells' friend, told Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV that Wells and his children had moved back to the area less than two weeks ago from Las Vegas, where Wells had worked in construction until he had a falling out with the children's mother.
Marsh said the family had been staying with him temporarily, and Wells was returning from a search for another place where he and the children could stay.
