Wendover, UT : One died and two others critically injured when a semi-trailer rig struck a car parked on I-80 near Wendover on Friday morning, April 22, 2016
One person was killed and two more were fighting for their lives after a semi-trailer rig struck a car on Interstate 80 near Wendover early Friday.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the semi hit the car, a Dodge Neon, as it was either stopped or traveling slow in the right travel lane, about 23 miles east of the Utah-Nevada border, at 5:11 a.m. The big rig was traveling about 65 mph at the time.
The collision crushed and propelled the car off the right side of the freeway, killing a 38-year-old male backseat passenger, Andy W. Lew, instantly. The 34-year-old female driver and a 35-year-old passenger, also a woman, were critically injured.
Royce said one of the injured was airlifted to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, while the other was flown to University Hospital in Salt Lake City.
The semi's driver, uninjured, pulled over and called 911 as he rushed back to check on the car and its occupants, UHP said.
