Charlotte, N.C : Two-car accident Tuedsay morning killed a pregnant woman in Gastonia. January 6, 2015
Charlotte, North Carolina
A Gaston County crash Tuesday morning claimed the life of a pregnant Kings Mountain woman. Efforts by troopers allowed for the woman's baby to be born. The baby later died Tuesday evening.
Officials say Rebecca "Becky" Williams, 24, died after the collision. According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, Williams was traveling south on N.C. 216 near Lewis Farm Road when her vehicle, a Subaru, traveled onto the right shoulder. According to the N.C. Department of Public Safety, Williams instinctively overcorrected causing her car to veer into the path of a Chevrolet Equinox.
The two vehicles collided before coming to a final rest in the roadway.
When the crash occurred, Trooper Kasey L. Cornwell was around a mile away investigating an earlier collision when a passing motorist frantically informed him of the serious collision that had just occurred.
"I just think the good Lord put us in the right place at the right time to provide us with that assistance to that young lady," Cornwell said.
Cornwell radioed for EMS personnel as he rushed to the crash scene in an attempt to render life-saving care. Hearing the sense of urgency in Cornwell's voice, Trooper Brian Theis, radioed Cleveland County troopers for assistance.
Troopers pulled Williams from her vehicle and she was unresponsive. They noticed she was nine months pregnant.
"What was going through my mind was to just keep doing the job," Cornwell said. "Just keep doing what we are trained to do and get the job done."
While responding to the crash, Amanda Broome, a nurse's assistant, pulled over to help. Both troopers, as well as Broome performed CPR in an attempt to save Williams' life and the life of her unborn child. The three provided CPR for more than 15 minutes until an ambulance arrived.
Williams was transported to Gaston Memorial Hospital where she died. Medical personnel at CaroMont Regional Medical Center were able to deliver and save the newborn, named Riley Andrew Williams.
Riley was delivered by C-section at CaroMont Regional Medical Center and flown to Charlotte. Linda Hoermann, Becky Williams' aunt, says it was Williams' dream to have a child and without the troopers and good Samaritan performing CPR, Riley would have never had a fighting chance.
Riley was born two weeks early. He was seven pounds and five ounces. After being delivered by cesarean section at CaroMont Regional Medical Center, he was transported to Levine Children's Hospital.
Late Tuesday evening, Riley was pulled off life support.
"He is just a precious, precious angel who put lots of smiles on his mom's face even before today," Hoermann said. "He made her the happiest person. She left this life very happy."
