Staunton, VA : Waynesboro man killed in crash in Albemarle County early Friday morning, December 16, 2016

Police said a Waynesboro man was killed early Friday morning in a crash in Albemarle County, according to a press release.

Christopher M. Spears, 22, died in the single-vehicle crash.

An unidentified passenger in the car was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville with minor injuries, the Albemarle County Police Department reported.

The crash took place at about 4 a.m. in the 4500 block of Rockfish Gap Turnpike.

Authorities said Spears was headed westbound when he crossed over both lanes of traffic, went down an embankment and hit a tree head-on. The roadway was shut down between Brownsville and Miller School roads until 8:30 a.m.

It was the sixth fatal crash in Albemarle County this year, the press release said.
